Daren earned his BA in English Literature and his teaching licensure in the Urban Community Teacher Education program from the University of Colorado at Denver. His children, Tenley and Channing, are a part of the SMA community in the kindergarten and junior kindergarten programs. Prior to SMA, Daren was a fifth grade teacher in Parker, Colorado.
Daren has a passion for literature and film and believes increasing our strength in the arts truly helps us develop into self-reflective individuals with a deeply seated passion for the absolute beauty of life. His favorite genre of novels is sci-fi/fantasy and his favorite films are anything that can make him cry! His favorite way of being active is going to the gym and sitting in the sauna afterwards. He also enjoys hiking with his family and dogs through the mountains of Colorado and skiing in the winter. Quiet time to sit and just be is essential for his daily life and sanity, and he takes joy in yoga from time to time.
Daren loves to have fun in the classroom takes every opportunity to foster that love for life and learning within each and every student who enters his classroom. He loves teaching every subject area but especially reading and writing. Daren believes in a relationship-driven classroom management system and in creating a culture where it is cool to be kind and compassionate towards one another. He encourages his students to strive for excellence and to truly discover who they are as individuals and as part of a community. Teaching is his passion and profession and he feels truly blessed to have the opportunity to grow in such an awe-inspiring environment.
