Andrew Beckham, HS Fine Arts
Andrew holds a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art and an MA in aesthetic theory from Prescott College. He is SMA's Visual Arts Department Chair and he also teaches art in the High School.
At the turn of the millennium Andrew was a Fulbright Fellow in Jerusalem. Although he didn't know it at the time, it was the most important year of his life because it launched his career as both an artist and an educator. In the spring of 2000, Andrew accepted a teaching position at St. Mary's Academy while still overseas, and he has never looked back. As his work in the classroom evolved, so did his practice as a professional artist, and he found that the two were inseparable from one another. Andrew feels privileged to be a part of the extraordinary community at St. Mary's Academy, where the arts are fostered, supported, and celebrated.
Andrew volunteers with the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, InFocus/Phoenix Art Museum, and the Center for the Study of Place. Some of his favorite artists include Anselm Kiefer, James Turrell, and Mary Frank, whose reflection on the enormity of the universe he admires. He also finds the poetry of W.S. Merwin, the essays of Annie Dillard, and the short stories of Barry Lopez to be continually revitalizing and profoundly helpful to him.
