SMA First: SMA Team Headed to Finals of Robotics Competition
For the first time in SMA Robotics history, a team has qualified for the finals of a robotics competition. The MS Robotics Team not only made it to the finals of the Rocky Mountain BEST Competition, but also placed second out of 24 teams, most of which were high school teams. SMA also placed second in the overall 'BEST' award which recognized excellence in the following areas: Robotics Competition, the Engineering Notebook, the Marketing Presentation, the Exhibit and Interviews, and Spirit and Sportsmanship. Additionally, MS won the 'Most Robust' Robot Award (along with DSST-Byers, who won the competition).
The SMA students have earned entry to the BEST Regional competition which will take place on Saturday, December 16, from 9:30 - 4:30 PM, at the Auraria Campus Events Center. At this competition, they will compete in the same categories against top teams from other district-level BEST competitions from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and New Mexico.
The MS Robotics team is a cohesive, hardworking, and capable group of students. They have learned programming in RobotC, created CAD designs in VCarve-Pro, made designs on the CNC Shopbot. They made several prototypes which they tested against one another to provide data that ultimately decided what prototypes made it to the final robot. Similarly they tested functions such as speed, timing, and launch angles to optimize the robots. Besides the technological aspects of the project, the team practiced the marketing presentation in front of a "mock" panel of adults, receiving critical and constructive feedback, and the students worked tirelessly on the engineering notebook, creating a document that is quite impressive.
The team, coached by faculty advisors Mr. Gesler and Ms. Iswari and HS mentors Anna Jonsen and Riley Fitzpatrick, is currently practicing twice weekly after school to develop all aspects of their work in preparation for the BEST Regional Competition. We are so proud of their accomplishment!
Reminder! Academy Parents Meeting

Lower School Veterans Day Assembly
At 8:15 AM on Friday, November 10, a special Veterans Day assembly will honor the brave men and women who have served our country in the military. We would like to invite any veterans who are able to come and spend about 30 minutes with us at a short program prepared by the second grade students. If you know a veteran who could join us that morning, please email Marla Giardinowith his/her name and branch of service by Nov. 6 so that we will have a headcount. Veterans and their families are welcome to stay for light refreshments after the assembly. Thanks so much for your help in recognizing as many veterans as possible!
All Academy Musical Audition Workshop

Please bring your own snacks to eat before the workshop. Mrs. Carr will pick up any interested LS students at 3:00 PM and walk them over to the Forum. Parents are asked to pick up students from the Forum at 4:30 PM.
Seely Greenberg is the Director of Admissions at St. Mary's Academy. Seely holds a BS in psychology from Northern Arizona University and a MA in counseling and human resource development from South Dakota State University. She is thrilled to be working with students and their families at SMA. A mother of two SMA graduates, Seely is deeply and proudly enmeshed in the St. Mary's Academy community. While she can be found giving tours of the campus now, she used to be found in the Bishop Evans gym with pompoms and a megaphone at Wildcat volleyball and basketball games. Seely is an avid attendant at Pure Barre classes, or as she calls it "ballerina school," loves spending time with her daughters, and is enjoying another wonderful year at St. Mary's Academy.
The SMA LS Presto Orchestra will again have the honor of performing at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House prior to Colorado Ballet's production of The Nutcracker on Saturday, December 9. The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts at St. Mary's Academy and is dedicated to funding areas of greatest need. While tuition covers a large portion of SMA's budget, the Annual Fund is essential to producing enriching academic, creative, social, and athletic experiences for our students.
Congratulations to the MS Cross Country Runners! The girls team finished in first place with five runners placing in the top ten. The MS boys had two runners in the top ten and the team placed fifth overall. This was the Ninth Annual Monster Dash at SMA and eleven schools with over 135 runners participated. Despite the flurries and the chill in the air, it was another great way for the teams to end the season.
Creating costumes for the race is a highlight of this experience. The costume contest was judged by a representative from each school and the awards were given to Graland for the Scariest, Englewood for the Funniest, Kent Denver for the Most Creative, and Aspen Academy for the Best Dressed Team.
Congratulations to our Wildcat runners and thank you to our coaches, parent volunteers, athletic trainer, spectators and our HS Cross Country Team for help and support during the season and event.
