St. Mary's Academy Welcomes Bill Barrett, Academy President
Dear SMA Community,
I am humbled and excited to have officially begun my tenure as President of St. Mary's Academy on July 1. Throughout my transition, the kindness, generosity, and support my family and I have received is nothing short of remarkable. We are so very grateful.
Since my appointment in the fall I have had the opportunity to regularly connect with several members of the administrative team, faculty, staff, and Board, and I enjoyed meeting many of you when I visited SMA for a week in April, which included my attending the Annual Gala. The conversations I have had with representatives from all constituents in the community have allowed me to gain an even deeper understanding of what makes SMA such a special place!
I am eager to partner with you in support of our students during the coming school year. To that end, I will be on campus throughout the remainder of the summer. If you would like to schedule a formal time to meet, or just stop in to say hi, please feel free to do so as I welcome the opportunity to get to know you.
Until then, enjoy the remaining weeks of summer, and I look forward to seeing you soon!

High School Renovation and Campus Landscaping
Phase 2 of the HS renovation project is well underway. When our HS students and faculty return in the fall, they will be greeted by some fabulous changes including a new dining room and patio, new college counseling suite, a remodeled east hallway and east wing classrooms, and new carpeting in some areas. The Challenge Foundation will also have new headquarters.
Phase 1 of the SMA Campus Landscape Plan has begun! In addition to improving the overall aesthetic of the property, our goal is to replace some areas of turf with xeriscape that feature indigenous plants and low water use landscape materials. Over time, we will reduce our water use. The work started in June and will continue in the early fall. The center circle around the statue of Mary has already been transformed!

High School News & Events
In June, twelve HS students participated in an eleven-day pilgrimage to sites in Ireland,Northern Ireland, and Scotland. On this incredible trip the students had the opportunity to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College in Dublin and visit the peace wall and Titanic museum in Belfast. In Scotland they visited the abbey on the island of Iona, castles in Edinburgh and Stirling, and the William Wallace Monument, also in Stirling. There were times for reflection and journaling and the students saw lots of sheep! It was a wonderful journey they will long remember.
