Last week, the HS hosted Lynda Blackmon Lowery who became involved in the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama, in the 1960s at age 13. In 1965, she was the youngest person to join Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others on a march from Selma to Montgomery and was among those arrested that day on what has become known as Bloody Sunday. Mrs. Lowery chronicles her involvement in civil rights as a teen in her book, Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom: My Story of the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March.

Who's Who at Our School?
Martha Ashley - MS Principal
Martha holds a BS in engineering technology from Texas A&M University and a President's Scholar Masters in liberal arts from Southern Methodist University. She is the Middle School Principal at St. Mary's Academy.
From the first moment Martha stepped into a classroom, she knew she was doing good work and that she was where she was meant to be. Before transitioning to education, she practiced engineering, started a small business, tried writing for a living, and backpacked and biked in Europe.
Working with the Challenge Foundation as a mentor is at the top of Martha's list of volunteer work. Working on environmental issues in Denver and during the summer in New Mexico are two more of her volunteer passions.
Please note the date for The Island has been changed to February 24.
High School News & Events
After a two-year process involving the generosity, support, patience, and hard work of many people, SMA's Visual Art Department Chair Andrew Beckham has had twelve of his photographic works acquired by the Denver Art Museum for its Permanent Collection. This acquisition was made possible by generous underwriting from the American Land Publishing Project as well as logistical and curatorial support from GFT Books, Goodwin Fine Art, and the DAM's Curator of Photography, Eric Paddock. To the right is an image of one of the pieces from the acquisition.
This past weekend Mock Trial participants practiced at the University of Denver in anticipation of the February 24-25 meet. SMA has 40 students on four Mock Trial teams.
