Phil Gentry has coached the St. Mary’s Academy Wildcats for the past 22 seasons, longer than any other basketball coach in the Metro League. He joined SMA after assisting with the boys’ basketball program at Colorado Academy from 1989 to 1994.
During his career as Head coach of the Wildcats, he has led the Varsity to nine trips to the State Tournament, including four appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and one appearance in the Elite Eight. The Wildcats were League Champions in 1998 and Division Champions in 2009 and 2010.
Sixteen of his 22 seasons have resulted in double-digit victories, with 10 of those achieving 13-plus victories. Gentry’s current career total of 260 victories places him 23rd all-time for Colorado Girls Basketball and 11th all-time for Colorado Girls Basketball at the same school. In addition to basketball, Gentry coached the SMA Wildcats Cross Country team from 1996 to 1999, and led the team to an 8th place finish at the 1996 State Meet.
Gentry was inducted into the Metro League Hall of Fame in the spring of 2015.
Gentry graduated Magna Cum Laude from Colorado College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Economics, and received the Outstanding Business and Economics Award for the class of 1985. In addition to his coaching role at SMA, Gentry is also a Mathematics Instructor and the Director of College Counseling.
Gentry states that he knew St. Mary’s Academy was the place for him immediately following the student interview that led to his 1995 hire. Gentry has one daughter, a senior at SMA, who has been a Wildcat since Kindergarten.
