Co-Ed Lower School
St. Mary’s Academy’s elementary school, referred to as the Lower School, is a co-educational program beginning with an age 4 Junior Kindergarten and extending through grade 5. The Lower School learning environment allows children to grow in a happy, positive, and engaging community. Lower School teachers nurture and challenge their students academically, physically, and spiritually as they develop a sense of themselves and their place in the world. Students are busy and engaged and willing to try new things in this trusting environment. With love and patience, our teachers hold students to high academic and behavioral expectations in a physical environment designed for exploration and independence. Teachers create lessons that maximize authentic learning in the acquisition of new skills and concepts.
Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Our Junior Kindergarten classroom has twenty students with three teachers, and our Kindergarten classes have fifteen students with one teacher in each room. These small class sizes allow our dedicated faculty the opportunity to give each child individual attention, customize teaching to help children grow educationally, emotionally, and socially. We are dedicated to ensuring that Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten are wonderful years for young children at St. Mary’s Academy—guiding these young children to be independent learners who are compassionate, engaged, and respectful members of our community.
Our students build self-discipline, empathy, integrity, resilience and courage as experienced through the lens of our four Loretto School Values: faith, community, justice, and respect.
Grades 1 – 5
While the curriculum is rigorous, the academic atmosphere at SMA Lower School is caring, supportive, and developmentally stimulating—children have daily opportunities to grow, succeed, and achieve during these formative years. Teachers work in vertical teams, allowing them to truly know each student—where they are in their academic and emotional growth, and how to ready them as they move to the next level in their learning.
An integrated curriculum, which includes core subject areas of math, literacy, science, social studies and values, connects subject matter and analytical problem-solving skills with the real world, engaging students’ hearts and minds. Five specials area courses including art, music, library, physical education, Spanish, and technology complement core curriculum on a regular basis. With an emphasis on the whole child, our Lower School participates in a myriad of activities (including twice daily recess!) designed to empower students to discover new interests in sports, fine arts, and community service.
